How to Grow Bergenia
Commonly known as elephant's ears, because of their large, leathery, oval leaves, bergenias have become fashionable again, thanks both to the number of new cultivars that have become widely available and to their usefulness in the garden.
Tough and adaptable, Bergenias will grow in almost any situation; they are equally at home in shade, dry shade and full sun.
Sow either from late summer to autumn or late winter to late spring
When planting Bergenia seeds directly outdoors it is best to sow out the seeds on the surface in the early spring; Bergenia seeds require a period of cold for germination so it is important to sow outside before the last frost.
If you plan to start Bergenia indoors place the seeds in moist soil and seal inside placed in a plastic bag then refrigerate for two weeks. After two weeks sow the seeds onto the surface of moistened compost in cell packs or trays. Press the small seeds into the compost but do not cover as they need light to germinate.
Place in a light position and keep at temperatures of around 21°C (70°F). Water from the base of the tray, keeping the compost moist but not wet at all times.
Germination can be slow and erratic, although most seedlings will appear within 4 to 8 weeks, however it is not unusual for seedlings to take up to six months, so do not discard the tray too soon.
Prick out each seedling once it has its first set of true leaves, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays to grow on indoors.
Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10 to 15 days before planting out once all danger of frost has passed. The plants will bloom in their second year from sowing.
