How to Grow Eustoma from Seed
Eustoma, Lisianthus or Prairie Gentian is a perennial but normally grown as an annual in the garden.
Eustoma can be grown from seed, but is not a plant for the beginner or impatient gardener, the plants take a long time to mature into blooming-sized plants unless cultivated under strictly maintained greenhouse conditions.
Surface sow the Eustoma seeds onto moist, well drained compost. Do not cover the seeds just press gently into the soil. Sow from February to April in a greenhouse or propagator at 70-75F. Germination normally takes 10-20 days.
It is important that the seeds are kept moist during the germination period and must not dry out - so a thin layer of vermiculite covering the seeds can help to retain moisture if you so wish. Once germinated, the seedlings can be grown on a little cooler at 60-68F.
Eustoma does take time to grow and at first it may feel as though growth has stopped however during this period the roots are forming. At this stage the seedlings need regular watering - although it is important not to overwater too.
When 4-5 true leaves have formed and are large enough to handle transplant the seedlings into individual 3 inch pots then pot on again into 7 inch pots once they have grown to around 12 inches tall.
Eustoma cannot tolerate a very acidic soil pH which results in yellowing of the leaves and decreased vigour; add limestone to increase the alkalinity. Keep Eustoma plants moist but avoid overwatering. Support rings and growing cages will give additional support to the elegant, but often flimsy stems of some Prairie Gentian varieties.
Eustoma prefers a full sun position.
