Melothria scabraLatin name
Small grape sized fruit that resemble miniature Watermelons but taste like cucumber with a citrusy twist. Easy to grow.
How To Grow Cucamelon
Cucamelons, also known as Mexican sour gherkins or mouse melons, are not a cross between cucumbers and melons as their name might suggest, they are a distinct plant within the cucumber family native to Mexico and Central America.
The small, grape-sized fruits resemble tiny watermelons and have a refreshingly tart, citrusy flavour. They can be eaten raw or used in pickles, salads and garnishes.
Cucamelons are easy to grow and require minimal maintenance, they can be grown in all types of containers, and even growbags. Pots should be at least 30cm across and 30cm deep, and are situated in a warm, sunny location. Support the plants with a trellis or wigwam as you would with cucumber plants. It's also worth cutting back some of the top growth just before potting on or planting out, this will encourage new shoots to grow into the supports.
Water cucamelons regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged and feed regular with a balanced fertiliser. Use a potash-rich feed one once the plants start flowering and fruiting.
Fruits start to ripen from July. Harvest them regularly to encourage the production of more flowers and fruits. Cucamelons are typically grown as annuals in the UK, but they can be grown as perennials in warmer climates and can be overwintered indoors. They are sensitive to frost.
