How to Grow Perovskia from Seed

Growing Russian sage from seed requires patience. Germination can take between one and four months, during which time the seeds need to be kept continually moist and warm. Cold stratification before sowing can help improve germination by mimicing the natural winter cycle of the plant. To do this, place your seeds in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks.

The best time to move seedlings into the garden is in the early spring. Find a spot with plenty of sunlight, making sure that your seedlings have at least three feet of spacing in between them and keep watered until the roots take hold, but water cautiously. Once established, this plant doesn’t grow well in moist, poorly-drained soil and is highly susceptible to root rot, so make sure not to over-water.

Russian sage needs plenty of sunlight even if it doesn’t require much water. If it starts to look droopy, make provisions to get the plant more sunlight.
