How to Grow Gomphrena from Seed

Gomphrena, Globe Amaranth or Batchelor’s Buttons, are a cheerful, easy to grow addition to the garden. Their clover like heads are attractive to butterflies and wonderful both as a fresh and dried flowers.

To grow Gomphrena for cuting or for use in dried arrangements, plant them closely together to force longer flower stems. Cut the stems just as the heads are beginning to open.

Dried Gomphrena hold their colour for several years, cut as for fresh flowers and hang them upside down in a warm place to dry.

Seeds can be sown indoors in early spring, germination normally occurs within 14 to 21 days at 65F.

Sow thinly in trays and prick out into individual 3 inch pots once the seedlings are about an inch high and have developed 3 to 5 true leaves.

When the weather is warm and settled, they are planted in the garden. They can also be sown directly outside in the spring.

Plant out in groups for best effect, after the last frost has past, ideally in a sheltered but sunny spot.
