Lepidium Sativum

Persian CressCommon name

Commonly known as Persian Cress, this easy to grow greenery has become popular amongst floral artists as it makes a lovely cut flower filler. With sturdy branches of tiny, seed pods resembling silvery-green coins it can be used either fresh or dried in bouquets or wreaths. The leaves are edible and have a mild peppery flavour and can be nice in salads. 36-40”. HA.

How to grow Lepidium from Seed

Best sown in succession every two weeks. Direct sow from April and cover lightly. Thin when the first true leaves appear. Alternatively, sow into pots or trays at 55-65°F (13-18°C), 4-6 weeks before the last frost is expected. Germination takes 5-10 days on average. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors from May.

Use Persian cress fresh or dried. Harvest when the majority of the flowers have developed seedpods; if picked too early, they may wilt. For drying, hang it upside down in a warm, dry location.
