Coleus Colocha Mixed
Solenostemon scutellarioidesLatin name
Painted NettleCommon name
Unlike conventional Coleus, this new series has unique, wavy and ruffled leaf edges which are soft to the touch. The well branched plants thrive in direct sunlight as well as in shady conditions and the attractive two-tone mixture of rose and scarlet shades are positively eye-catching in borders, patio containers or grown as houseplants. 18-20”. How to Grow Coleus from Seed
Cheerful Coleus, the painted nettle, can be grown indoors as a houseplant or used outside as a bedding plant. The vibrant shades of its red, yellow, green, purple, bronze, pink and brown foliage make this attractive, ornamental member of the mint family a firm favourite and an easy, fun plant for children to grow.
Technically a tender perennial, outdoor grown Coleus is more often considered to be an annual, but by pinching back, removing the flower stems and growing it inside, Coleus can be kept for several seasons as a perennial.
Many varieties of Coleus will survive exposure to full sun, but the foliage colour is enhanced and the plants are happier when grown in the shade.
If your Coleus is being grown as a house plant, the seed can be sown indoors at any time of the year.
If your Coleus is destined for the garden location seed should be sown in early Spring, at least 10 weeks before your last expected frost.
Coleus seeds are very small and should be sown onto moist seed compost in a shallow tray, and then covered with a very thin layer of fine compost. Cover the tray to retain moisture, but do not exclude light, until the seeds have sprouted. Keep the tray warm 65075F is ideal, and in a bright position, avoiding full or direct sunlight.
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant them into individual 3 inch pots. Seedlings should be handled carefully by the leaf, never by the stem.
When all danger of frost is passed outdoor Coleus plants should be hardened off for a couple of weeks before being transplanted to a shady spot in the garden.
