How to Grow Thunbergia from Seed

Thunbergia, or Black-eyed Susan, is a garden favourite, growing quickly and flowering at an early age,  blooming from July through to October.

Black-eyed Susan is grown and displayed to great effective in window boxes, patio containers and hanging baskets where the vine can twist around the basket supports, it will live happily in a 12 pot in a conservatory or greenhouse and equally happy used as ground cover or left to ramble over trellises and fences. The vines can grow to five or six feet  (150 to 180cm) given support they will rambling and climb, without support they will happily trail and creep.

Sow from February to April into pots, trays or growing cells and cover with a 6mm (1/4 inch) layer of compost or vermiculite. Place in a light warm position where germination usually occurs with 14 to 21 days at 20-25C (68-77F).

When the Thunbergia seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual 3 inch, 7.5cm pots and gradually acclimatise to cooler conditions for at least two weeks before planting out when all danger of frost has passed.

Black Eyed Susan loves the sunshine and will prefer growing in a full sun position.
