Astilbe is a popular hardy perennial admired for its colourful feathery plumes and fern-like foliage. They can also provide winter interest if the seed-heads are left in place. It thrives best in moist, rich soil and partial to full shade. Too much direct sun can burn the leaves.

Astilbe seeds are tiny and almost dustlike, they can be slow to germinate.
Start seeds indoors, surface sow them by pressing gently into compost, do not cover the seeds because they need light to germinate, howeveer a humidity dome or clear plastic wrap is required to retain moisture in both the air and growing medium.

Place the seed tray under a growing light. Germination typically takes 4 to 5 weeks.

Once the seedlings have grown a few true leaves and are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots to grow on. Transplant young plants into their final growing locations in Autumn.

Plants require a couple of seasons to mature before flowering.
