How to grow Matricaria from seed
Matricaria, or German Chamomile, is excellent in cut flower arrangments and also makes a lovely filler for cottage gardens or herb gardens where it attracts butterflies, bees and beneficial insects. It was traditionally planted beside walkways where its sweet fragrance could be enjoyed.
German Chamomile is easy to grow from seed. Gently press the seeds into growing medium, but do not cover as light aids germination. Bottom water or mist to avoid covering the seed with soil.Germination usually takes 10-14 days at 70F (21C). Pot on into 3-4" pots once the seedlings are large enough to handle, (typically 2 to 4 weeks after sowing) and harden off before planting out.
To achieve longer stems and earlier blooms, we recommend sowing in autumn (Late Sept - Late Oct) and overwintering young plants in a greenhouse or poly tunnel to protect from frost and freezing temperatures, however Chamomile can also be sown in spring (Late Feb - Late April) and grown as an annual. Protect early plantings during cold spells and plant out after all risk of frost has passed.
