How to Grow Hedysarum from Seed
Hedysarum, also known as Sweetvetch, Sweet Broom or French Honeysuckle, is a once seen never forgotten plant.
Like most peas and beans Hedysarum is happiest on alkaline soil. Add calcified seaweed or a dressing of lime before planting. Avoid nitrogen rich feed, including manure, which would result in floppy growth and fewer flowers and always plant it in an open position without too much competition.
Seedlings from a summer or autumn sowing can be over-wintered in a cold frame or greenhouse. Seedlings from early spring sowings should be ready to plant out by late summer after a period of hardening off.
Hedysarum seeds are large enough to be planted directly into 3 inch pots and usually germinate within 28 to 42 days. Pot on the young plants once the roots start to protrude from the bottom of the pot.
