How To Grow Begonia Tubers

Begonias grow from dormant tubers that burst into life each spring. The tubers are firm, flattened structures that store energy through winter. When planted they slowly swell and sprout, sending up stems that eventually carry their signature blooms.

Begonias are incredibly sensitive blooms and need to be protected from harsh cold weather. Because they’re tender, they’re usually started indoors and lifted again before winter, allowing gardeners to re-grow the same tubers year after year.

Tubers can be started indoors as early as February and moved outside in spring once all danger of frost is over. Plant the tubers hollow side up, 2cm apart and 2.5cm deep, keep moist without over-wetting.
